Circuit de Melk
Après la fournaise du Portugal, la troisième épreuve du championnat d'Europe en Autriche s'est déroulée sous une pluie battante, où pour la petite histoire, Jean-Luc Pailler était absent pour cause de mariage de... sa fille. Kenneth Hansen (Citroën Xsara WRC) a survolé la concurrence en Division 1, remportant les deux premières manches avant de s'imposer en finale.
Au départ, Hansen a pris le meilleur sur Per Eklund (Saab 9.3 turbo WRC). Ce dernier, pare-brise maculé de boue, perdit rapidement le contact. Devant, Hansen surnageait sur une piste grasse à souhait où la moindre faute était vite sanctionnée. Avec cette troisième victoire consécutive en Europe, il prend un net avantage sur Martin Schanche (Opel Astra), seulement sixième.
Le Belge Ronny Scheveneels signe une nouvelle victoire sur sa vieille Golf GTi III 16V en Division 2. Mais le Norvégien Guttorm Lindefjell, qui vient de racheter la Peugeot 306 S16 blanche d'Eddy Bénézet, le champion sortant, finit second.
